Following on from my previous post about synchronicity…

Another part of synchronicity is intuition. Although they may seem like two separate phenomena, they are actually very closely connected. What you need to remember is that you ARE the universe, you are connected to everything and everyone. Your intuition is your life compass, your soul giving you a message to help you safely navigate your course through life. Listen to it.

Intuition is what guides us or sways us into making certain choices – like that feeling you get where you don’t know how you know something, but you just know! Your soul is sending  you a signal from within. Ever just been in the right place at the right time?  Your intuition is guiding you.

I have had so many things happen in my life thus far to get me where I am today, there is no doubt in my mind that the universe conspires to help the believer. The more you believe and recognise this, the more it will happen. It also works the opposite way, if you are depressed and disconnected from your soul, you will be on a downward spiral, you will receive more bad ‘luck’ or missed opportunities than positive ones. If you stay positive and believe that everything is working out to your greatest good, i assure you it will.

If you had of asked me when i was 16  years old if i believed in synchronicity, or souls, or chakras and spiritual practices i would have laughed and said absolutely not. But when i made the decision to leave Newcastle and live for me, to take chances and have no fear, that’s when i started experiencing these strange ‘coincidences’. Here are a few examples.

Ibiza to Dublin flow.

When i was in Ibiza for my first season, i had went around so many job interviews for different bars, as does everyone. One morning i just happened to be passing by Viva bar on the West end and there was a que of about 40 people outside and a sign on the door saying Open Interviews. I had planned on going to the internet cafe down the road to photocopy some more CV’s so i had one with me anyway, that was lucky! So i jumped in the que and had an interview with the Manager for Revolutions Bar, Kim. It went amazing, she told me she loved me and would definatley be calling me for the job. Over a week later she still hadn’t called, that little liar i thought. So i decided to take a job as a PR that i was offered elsewhere even though i didn’t really want to. I went out that night down the west end for my last wild night out before starting the unwanted PR job. So i’m walking down the west end with my friends and one of the staff from Revolutions bar comes over and jumps on me so excited ”Oh thank god kirsty we’ve been looking all over for you, we really wanted to hire you but we lost your CV with your number on so instead of hiring somebody else we have been looking for you every night, can you start tomorrow please?”.

If i had not of decided to go down the west end that night and been walking by at that exact moment, i would not have bumped in to her and got the job working in Revolutions where i went on to spend two summers! That on its own may seem quite small, but consider this… If i had not walked to the shop and happened to have a CV with me and THEN walked by some open interviews i didn’t know about, and had not walked down the west end and bumped into the manager of the bar that night after her losing my CV… i would not be here living in Dublin. As by working in that bar i was introduced to two of the PR’s Dylan & Lewis who were both Irish, they both introduced me to their massive group of friends all from Ireland who i clicked with straight away. During my first and second season it was these and more of the Irish lot who i would hang around with constantly, so at the end of my second season i flew to Dublin to be with all of my friends and live here. A year and a half later i am still here living in Dublin, and i couldn’t be happier. And by such a small ‘coincidence’ or ‘chance’.

 Mother daughter connection.

Now try explaining this one with science. A few years ago while i was living in Spain i had such a weird dream one night. I dreamt that i had woken up, went into the bathroom to brush my teeth, after brushing them i looked into the bathroom mirror about to wash my face and my full face was covered in these awful red swollen lumps/spots. So your thinking, ok whats weird about that, it was just a dream?

After waking up the first thing i did was called my Mam back home in England for a chat. ”What ya doing?” i asked. I nearly fell of the sofa when i heard her reply ”Nothing i’m fuming, i’ve been sat at the Walk in Centre all morning to see the Dr. I woke up this morning and when i went in the bathroom to brush my teeth and get washed i seen my face in the mirror and my full face is covered in a massive spotty rash.” My face turned white when she said it to me, i couldn’t even explain to her about my dream as my voice was shaking that much.

After conception, until your own heart is formed, you share a heartbeat with your mother until your own is strong enough to start beating. This creates such an intimate bond and a connection that cannot be put in to words. Somehow in my dreaming state, I was aware of what happened to my Mam that morning.

That’s my bike.

So this story is about a friend of mine Amiee, but i just loved it so much and it’s such a good example of how your intuition can guide you, i just had to share it.

She’s had this beautiful vintage bike for about 6 years now, it has a huge basket on the front and is totally unique there’s no mistaking it. Quite recently her bike was stolen when she left it locked up outside a shop. Of course she was devastated as she’d had this thing years but nothing could be done and a few weeks later she drove into town to go buy a new one. On her way back from the town, her new shiny bike in the back of her car, she decided to take a little detour from her usual route. For some reason (she still doesn’t know why she decided to do this), she drove a longer way home through some small streets she had never been down before. Half way down some totally random street she spotted her bike stood up against somebody’s garden fence! She jumped out, threw it in the back of her car and took off as fast as she could. Honestly this makes me laugh so much, i can just picture it.

Intuition leads to synchronicity.

Intuition works very much in the same was as synchronicity does, as in once you make a conscious decision to be open to it and to trust it, it will come. It is that unexplainable feeling you get on the inside, that leads to and manifests synchronicities on the outside. If you follow your intuition it will never lead you astray, this is your soul trying to communicate with your physical body to help guide you in the right direction. Your soul always knows what to do, you just have to quiet your mind and listen to it.

The more you follow your intuition, the more empowered you become, the happier you become and the more unstoppable you become.

Often described as small ‘meaningful coincidences’.

There is no such thing as a coincidence. There is an order and connectedness of the universe that we cannot even begin to comprehend. Have you ever picked up your phone to look at it and exactly as you did it started to ring? Or you’ve just been talking about somebody who you haven’t seen in years and the next day you bump in to them? You’ll be thinking of asking a friend if they fancy booking a holiday to Spain and the next day they’ll call you with the exact same idea? Your on holiday half way around the world in a small little shop and you bump into an old friend from home? These things are not coincidences, they are synchronicities.

I am always experiencing small synchronicities in my everyday life, every time I do I am so grateful. I have become so used to it now and so open to it that even the people around me notice it and get freaked out. When something strange happens now I smile and laugh. A synchronicity is a sign from the universe that you are on the right track, that you are in alignment with the universe and with your higher self. Embrace it and be open to it.

A few examples of synchronicities in my own life recently.

  • I am often saying stuff to my friends that freaks them out, how did you know I was going to say that? Or how did you know that’s what I was thinking about? Or how did you know that’s what I was doing? The answer is synchronicity. A few weeks ago I called a friend of mine and as soon as he answered the phone I launched into a story about how I had walked for about 15 miles and had the biggest blister ever on the inside of my foot which I had to burst and now was in agony. He just hangs up on me and sends me a text saying ‘go away your after freaking me out’. I called him back laughing and said why did I freak you out, because I was telling you about a blister? And he says no because you must be watching me, I’m sitting on the edge of my bed trying to pop a blister as you called me, how did you know that?  I also called him a few weeks later and when he answered I said ‘OMG guess what?’. ‘What?’ He says. I laughed and said ‘cold peas aren’t hot’ just because I thought this was funny, I used to say it when I was younger. Of course I didn’t know that at the time I said it when he answered the phone he is eating a big spoonful of peas, ‘YOU’RE AN ALIEN STOP DOING THAT’ he laughed
  • .When I was younger I was always drawing pictures of clothes I would love to design. I have always wanted a beautiful green lace dress, I’ve often sat and described the exact dress I wanted which I had imagined and drawn, and said to my best friend that I would love to one day design this dress and have it made for myself. I was then sitting in work one day reading an article about synchronicities and the exact dress I had been describing to my best friend for the past two years appeared at the side of the article on an advertisement for a sale on a clothing website. I took a picture and sent it to him straight away and he also couldn’t believe it, this EXACT dress I have wished for appearing in a sale on a SYNCHRONICITY article! Thank you universe!
  • I have always been very against gambling from a young age. ‘It’s a fool’s game’ I say. However one day I was on the phone to a friend and I shouted ‘Eeeeep I just found a lucky cent’. Of course he laughed and said ‘Kirsty you say this about 10 times a day, every cent you find is not a lucky one’. Pffft, I’ll show you. So I said you know what, I’m gonna go in to this shop and buy a scratch card, ill use my lucky cent to scratch it and I’ll win. I won’t win a fortune because I don’t want to be steered towards gambling, but I’ll win like two euros or something. Of course I strolled out of the shop with my scratch card I had just won two euros on absolutely delighted with life. I never cashed it, I keep it in my purse as a reminder.
  • And then the one that inspired me into writing this post today. Last night I was walking home from the gym, bouncing along as I always do. Every traffic light on every road I came to on the 50 minute walk home turned green exactly as I got to it. Skipping along I think to myself, ahh I love when I’m so in tune. I look over at the bus sign I’m just about to walk past and the numbers on the sign all change to 11, 44 & 13. For those who don’t know me personally, I always take the number 11, or 1111 as a sign to make a wish – 11 is a very powerful angel number and my favourite. The number 13 I have tattooed on my left wrist, this is my lucky number. I realised from a young age that you do not get lucky by chance, you create your own luck. I decided that unlucky 13 would be my lucky number just to prove to myself that if I said it would be lucky it would, and guess what? It always has brought me luck. The number 44 I have tattooed on my right wrist. For me this number stands for equality, support and stability, I have it tattooed as a daily reminder of these things. Also in angel numbers the number 44 is a very strong indication of worthiness and inner wisdom. What are the chances that just as I am thinking to myself how connected I am these 3 numbers would appear on the road sign in front of me?

These are all seemingly small synchronicities, but when you open your heart and mind up to them and invite them in, you will see more and more of them every day. You ARE consciousness and you ARE the universe. The more they happen the more you will realise, this cannot just be a coincidence, this is something more, something bigger. A sign that you are on the correct path, a wink from the universe, a message from your higher self.

I know this kind of post isn’t for everybody and a lot of people will just think I’m nuts. But the first step in the right direction, the first step in creating your own luck or influencing ‘chance’ is to accept that it exists and that it is possible. Anybody who is around me long enough will admit that there is no explaining some of the stuff that happens to me by normal reasoning and I love that. Because as soon as they admit that there’s even the tiniest possibility that what happens to me is not regular coincidence, but something more, they have began to open up to it. This brings us to the next part.. Intuition. Which i will be posting about on Thursday.

TRUST, that everything in your life is in divine order and synchronicity. TRUST, all that you see is perfectly in line with you path and you are always in the perfect time and space. Be, think and act love.

Remember, you can either be on this upward spiral of connectivity and oneness – or you can be on the downward spiral, disconnected from your soul and your souls mission. The choice is yours, all you have to do is be positive and believe that it is possible.

Mindfulness Meditation.

I recently wrote a post on Mindfulness, explaining how to be more mindful in your day to day life and why I feel this is important. If you haven’t read it yet, you can find it on my home page, scroll down on the right hand side and click on the ‘Spiritual’ category, and you will find the post called ‘Mindfulness, the first step in learning to meditate’. I suggest you read that one first to catch up before moving on.

This post is going to help you use your mindfulness practices to start learning to meditate. I say learning because this won’t just come to you overnight, it does take practice and it does take patience, but you get out of it what you put in. The rewards are plenty!

There are so many different types of meditation, I personally think that mindfulness meditation is the best place to start as this particular form is to help us be completely present and aware in the current moment. Other types of meditation can focus on relaxation, or to attain higher consciousness, but we are going to start simple.

Buddha taught us that the source of all suffering, is our attempt to escape from our experiences. Unfortunately we cannot breeze through life without having our fair share of painful or unpleasant experiences, so instead of trying to escape them we are practising mindfulness. This will teach us to stop trying to escape the pain of unpleasant moments, but instead to be fully present and accept whatever our current circumstance may be. When we are present and accepting we can then use our inner voice and our innate wisdom to direct us and make the right choices to heal and move forward with clarity and confidence.

Now not only is mindfulness teaching us to be present and to overcome the doom and gloom, it is also teaching us how to be fully present and experience the joys and the ups of life as well. When we are mindful, we learn how to show up in our own lives. Only when you start to practice will you realise how you have never really been here in the moment, too often our minds are wandering and because of this we miss what is happening right now. Life is like a river, always moving and always flowing, you cannot touch the same river twice and you cannot experience a moment twice, so mindfulness is teaching us to be here now.

Body Breath & Thoughts.

Body –

First of all you need to dedicate a space for meditating. This must be somewhere peaceful and quiet, somewhere you know you cannot be disturbed. If you want you can decorate your meditation space with objects you find peaceful or comforting, just nothing that will distract you. I personally choose to meditate on the floor of my bedroom, I have a small stand set up with spiritual objects such as elephant and Buddha statues, crystals, a few candles and incense sticks as well as my Ganesha tapestry in the room. If you do not like incense it might be a good idea to have a small bunch of lavender in your meditating space as this aids in relaxation.

Although I sit on the floor with my legs crossed and my hands resting on my knees, this is not necessary. You can sit on a chair, sit on the floor or on a cushion, just whatever is most comfortable for you. Just make sure that however you choose to sit you are not slumped over, make sure you have good posture but not too forced or rigid.

Now for this type of meditation there is no need to close your eyes, just let your gaze rest gently on the floor, or on your stand you have set up in front of you. However do not focus on anything specific, just let your eyes rest as if you were looking into the distance.

So now your set up and your eyes are gently gazing in front of you just begin to detach from all of the things going on in your life and bring your attention to your body and your environment. If you mind wanders away, just gently bring it back. Do not get frustrated, your mind will wander this is completely normal. Every time you realise your mind has drifted, just bring it back again to your body.

Breath –

The next part of the practice is to just bring your attention to your breathing. Unlike other types of meditation you are not trying to change your breathing, there is no need for deep breathes or anything. Just breathe as normal and be aware of it, usually what will happen is when you focus on your breathing it will change slightly, don’t worry about it this can’t be helped it is just your body’s natural response. Now your focus is between your body and your breath.

Thoughts –

This brings us to the final part of this meditation, working with your thoughts. Even as your focus is on your breath and body you will notice that thoughts arise. This is all you have known this far so this is natural, do not try and suppress your thoughts and do not get frustrated if you find your mind wandering, this is completely normal. Just practice letting go of these thoughts without judgement, let them flow in and when you notice your mind is drifting away to your plans or your memories or that tv show, just gently bring your focus back to your breath and body again. This will happen over and over, but remember the point of mindfulness meditation is NOT to clear your mind, but to work with your present moment experience. Just notice what happens.

How long should you practice?

If you are a beginner I recommend to start meditating for between 5 and 10 minutes. Do not try and overdo it at first as this is how you get overwhelmed, frustrated and bored. Just start small. Also so that you are not tempted to keep checking the clock to see how long you have left, set a quiet & gentle alarm for your chosen time in say in 10 minutes. Over time you can gradually increase by a few minutes when you feel you are ready.

The most powerful feeling is the moment you break through your wall. Love and light.

Do not fear failure.

You know, I keep seeing these quotes everywhere trying to inspire and motivate people saying things like ‘failure is not an option’. I know they are coming from a good place but things like this make me realise why people have such unrealistic expectations of themselves and of others. Of course failure is not an OPTION, if we had a choice to fail at something or to succeed, obviously we would choose success. But you know what, failure happens! Does it make you any less of a success? Absolutely not. Does it make you not good enough? Not even a tiny bit. Does it mean that you won’t succeed in the future? Of course not, relax, take a deep breath, pick yourself back up and try again!

The society we are living in puts so much pressure on us, taking tests in school, going to college, going on to university, getting the perfect job, finding a partner & settling down. How can anybody make a decision about what they want to do for the rest of their life at such a young age? I personally will fully admit that the course I done at college I have absolutely zero interest in pursuing as a career. That’s ok, I was 16 years old when I chose it and I made a mistake, I still had an absolute ball of a time at college. I’m only human & I’m sure in another 7 years’ time when I’m 30 I’ll be looking back on decisions that I’m making now and laughing thinking the same thing. Hopefully by that time I will be somewhere on the boarders of the Amazon working on an eco-farm, but who knows? What I want changes so often, what I thought I wanted 7 years ago, is very different from what I want now, maybe in 7 years what I want then will be totally different again! There’s a reason for that, it’s called growth.

My own example was of college, but it really does go for anything – relationships, work, friendships, college, sports, hobbies and really anything you do in life. The only time you will truly fail, is if you let your past failures consume you. Each time you make a mistake or you’ve failed at something, think to yourself ok then so what can I learn from this experience so that I come closer to succeeding next time? Life will keep on sending you the same lesson to relive over and over until you learn what you were supposed to. Accept the situation for what is, realise your lesson, put it into practice and move on.

I personally am grateful for every time I have failed, and for my failures yet to come. Each time I fail or make a mistake and am able to take responsibility and move on from it, I get stronger and wiser than I was before. You’re never going to have everyone’s approval, you’re never going to be perfect at everything. You’ll have shitty jobs, people will tell you you’re not good enough, you’ll date shitty people or even worse you will date amazing people and yet it still won’t work. That’s life, shit happens, you can’t be everyone’s cup of tea & even though sometimes we would like to think we can do everything, we can’t – that’s what makes us different, what makes us unique.

It doesn’t matter if other people don’t have faith in you, or if other people don’t think your worthy or that you can do it, people will always try to bring you down weather they do it intentionally or not. It breaks my heart to think that some people absorb the hurtful words of others and this becomes their reality. All that matters is that YOU continue to have faith in yourself, believe in yourself, and love yourself unconditionally. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.

& whatever it was that came in to your head when you read this.. If it was something that happened in the past that you’ve been tearing yourself up over, just let it go. If it was something that you’ve not done yet because you’re afraid? Just do it, I for one have complete faith in you.

That thing that scares you the most is a clear indication of what you must do next. You should always go with the choices that scare you the most, as even though they require the most from you, they also have the greatest rewards.

The most difficult roads lead to the most beautiful destinations.

Unfortunately we can never know what comes next, whether it be good or bad, but what we can do is be brave in who we are and face whatever is coming with alacrity.

Abs for days.

If you’ve been following my blog from the start I’m sorry to be repeating myself. Just for anybody new reading I would like to say I am NOT a personal trainer, I am just sharing my own workouts for you to try. Everybody is different, so I’m going to give you my own ab routine and a few tips to help you see what works best for you & to help you put together your own.

My ab workout has kind of taken a back seat the past few weeks. I’ve recently started strength and conditioning training with the amazing @shiloramdin so at the moment we are working on my form and getting much STRONGER. A lot of the big lifts i am working on at the moment really strengthen the core anyways, but of course I still throw in a quick ab session on the end of a workout every now and again as summer is fast approaching and I plan on wearing a crop top every single day.

For women your body fat percentage has to be around 15% or lower to be able to see your abs, for men it has to be about 12% or lower. No matter how many times you do this ab routine, if you have a layer of fat over your stomach, you aren’t going to be able to see your abs underneath.

This is where the saying ‘abs are made in the kitchen’ comes in to play. To have well defined abs the most important thing is you have to be eating very clean. I myself am always very strict with my ‘diet’ – I hate to call it this as It’s not really a diet, this is the way I eat permanently, it’s more of a lifestyle choice.

When cutting (trying to shed a few pounds) i personally use two methods, either the ketogenic diet or intermittent fasting, i’m going to write a post about both of these methods in the next week or two. Of course if your trying to lose that extra belly fat you should be doing cardio as well eating clean.

The Routine.

Hanging leg Raises – 5 sets of 5 reps.

Cable wood choppers – 3 sets of 8 reps each side.

Incline sit ups – 3 sets of 8 reps  – with a weight on chest.

Incline twist sit ups – 3 sets of 8 reps  – with weight on chest.

Side bends – 3 sets of 8 reps each side – with Dumbbell in one hand.

Russian twists – 3 sets of 20 – with weight in hands.

Progressive Overload.

Now when training your abs, there is no reason to treat them any different to your other muscles. So to build abs you need to be using the progressive overload method I talked about in my Leg & Booty building post. Basically this just means you need to keep lifting heavier and heavier weights, to force your muscles to adapt so they will get stronger and bigger! If you are a complete beginner you can start by performing the exercises without a weight, and then gradually build it up.

Hitting all of the muscle fibers.

When training any muscle you need to make sure your hitting all of the muscle fibers. There are two types, fast twitch & slow twitch – Fast twitch muscle fibers respond best to low repetitions and heavy weight, whereas slow twitch muscle fibers respond best to low weight and higher reps. The abs are made up of BOTH types. I tend to use heavier weights throughout my full workout, and then at the end i like to do my Russian twists with a lower weight but with 20 reps each time so as to hit those slow twitch muscle fibers and really feel the burn. Basically just make sure you mix it up!

Abs and Oblique’s.

If your putting together an ab workout you need to remember to train the oblique’s as well which are on either side. The easiest rule to remember for these exercises, is if it has a twisting motion or you are bending to the side it will be targeting the obliques. So make sure you get a variety in.

Just in case you don’t know what these exercises are i’m going to give you a link for a great website which has all of these exercises and videos with instructions on how to perform each one. Also feel free to message me or leave comments. Happy ab training!

Oh and just a quick P.s. for the girls – if you plan on getting your body fat percentage down low enough to see your abs, prepare to say goodbye to your diddies. You can’t have both. RIP to all the boobs lost to fitness.

Cyber Bullying.

There’s no doubt that the digital age has made the world a smaller place, making it easier for us to communicate and connect with others, and from what i’ve just witnessed on instagram it has made some peoples brains smaller too.

I was flicking through my Insta and I came across an account I had never seen before. Basically the whole point of this account is to ‘call out’ other gym goers in Ireland and make fun of them. Using screenshots of pictures taken from other people’s Instagram pages to post on their own page with comments underneath mocking them.

I’m sorry WHAT?

In what reality is this even acceptable? And even worse are the people who are liking these pictures and commenting underneath, encouraging it and calling the anonymous owner of the account a hero. Have you nothing better to do than try and tear down others just because you don’t like them, or because you disagree with them or the way they are? Not wanting to sound like a patronizing mother but – Mob mentality is a disgusting thing and every single one of you should be ashamed!

Now if this account had pictures of a load of very overweight, unhealthy gym goers up from gyms in Ireland and was making fun of them and calling them fat and laughing at them for working out, people would be disgraced & all hell would break loose. But because the page is actually making fun of people who are in shape or who are doing very well and are confident in their progress people are joining in the taunting and the hurtful comments. How is this any different? Bullying is bullying no matter who it is directed at.

In any situation this should be unacceptable, but to be making fun of anybody trying to better themselves in a gym or fitness environment is disgusting. Everybody has different fitness goals, just because somebody has different goals to you that’s ok to try and tear them down is it? Or just because somebody is proud of the progress they are making so they are posting up pictures on social media that’s ok to laugh? This does not effect you directly in any way shape or form, if you don’t like them you don’t have to socialise with them in the gym, nobody is forcing you to look through their Instagram posts! Just leave these people be.

People who use the same gyms, or who are interested in fitness etc should be raising each other up, telling each other well done for their progress, tell them they’re looking great & keep up the hard work. We are a fitness community, a fitness family – HENCE THE HASHTAG #IRISHFITFAM

Now I’ve personally not been targeted by this page and I hope I never do as its horrible, I just happened to come across it yesterday when I was online and it shocked me. Maybe I will be targeted by them just for writing this post, it wouldn’t surprise me. Either way If something infuriates me and stirs up that much emotion in me, I’m going to write about it. I’m a very strong believer that it’s hurt people who hurt people, so if anybody knows who the keyboard warrior behind said page is, please give them a hug from me and say a prayer for them. Its your compassion they need, even if they would not show you the same kindness.

Anybody who knows me knows I am not a confrontational person, I keep to myself and don’t get involved in other people’s business. But in this case I feel like some of the people who are liking the pictures on this page aren’t realizing that what they are doing is cyber bullying. My intention behind this post is that this will give them a wakeup call.

So maybe a few people will dislike me for this, or unfollow me, but to be honest I couldn’t care less. The thing i love about karma is its inevitability. Karma for me is a wonderful thing as I speak only words of kindness and encouragement about others and it always comes back to me tenfold. But for the makers of pages like the one in question KARMA IS A BITCH, maybe you’ll come back as a slug in your next life.

& I’d just like to add that although i do not know anyone on the page in question.. i think you’re all sexy bitches – keep it lit FIT FAM. Let’s raise it up.

  • Nearly 43% of internet users have been bullied online.
  • 90% of people who say they use social media, admit to having seen social media bullying and ignored it.
  • Bullying victims are are 2 to 9 times more likely to consider committing suicide.

Just let that sink in.

Mindfulness. The first step in learning to meditate.

If you read my first post Mind Body & Soul, you will know already how strongly I feel about meditation. It changed my life in a big way and I am forever grateful for the experiences in my life that lead me to want to research and learn more about the practice.

Now originally I started meditating to try and relax and wind down, anybody who knows me will know I am always bouncing off the walls. I have so much energy I’ve always found it hard to sit down and relax, or to switch off at night to try and fall asleep, I just love being on the go. But it’s mentally and physically draining to be this way 24/7, its important to take time out of the madness to relax and be still.  So I decided to try and meditate, I had read so much and heard so much about it & the thought of being able to clear my mind and get into a peaceful state was very appealing to me.

Even though this was my own reason for meditating, there are so many other physical and psychological reasons you should start. I’m going to write a post in the future about the benefits and facts of meditation, but this post is for you who have already decided you want to meditate, but you just don’t know how or have found it too difficult.

I tried so many different ways at first and gave up more than a few times. All I can say is don’t be disheartened, this is completely normal. People have this pre conceived idea that to meditate you have to be sitting on the floor legs crossed in the lotus position, eyes closed, chanting OM and to have your mind clear of any thoughts. This is so far from the truth. Although eventually one of the goals is to be able to clear your mind completely & not to be distracted, that takes a lot of time and practice & there are a lot of different ways you can start to meditate in your day to day life which can help you improve and build up to the harder more disciplined forms of meditation.

The first step is Mindfulness

The perfect place to start. The practice of mindfulness is to bring our attention to the present moment whatever that may be. To be fully present in your own body and pay attention to every single detail of your experience as it is happening right now. You don’t have to take the time out of your day to do this, you can incorporate it into your daily tasks. Start small, maybe while you are walking to work in the morning, or you are washing the dishes, cooking a meal, or you’re lying in bed.

The purpose of mindfulness is to be consciously aware of what you are doing, while you are doing it. So to explain I’ll use my own example of walking in to work.

  1. Instead of having your earphones in and listening to music, start by taking a few deep breaths as your walking along. Just focus on your breathing for a minute and continue to take slow and deep breaths, focus on the long breath in and the slow exhale. Enjoy it. Although you breathe in and out constantly all day every day, this is automatic, you are never really aware of it. Become mindful of your breathing and form a connection.
  2. Next bring your attention to your own body, be aware that you are here and you are inside your body. How does it feel right now? Are you cold? Is the wind making your face and hands bitter? Is your body clammy inside your jacket? Or is the heat from the sun nice and warming on your face? Are your feet comfortable in your new shoes? You get the idea.
  3. Now bring your attention to your surroundings. What can you hear? The rain pelting on your umbrella, a dog barking, footsteps, car horns, your own breath. Now what can you see?..

That’s it, there’s no effort to it, no hard work, no taking time out of your day. And for that few minutes you will notice, your thoughts weren’t racing, you weren’t worrying about your bills or that bad news you received, or about work today. You were just fully present in the moment. For me this is one of the most important steps I’ve ever taken, as the more you practice becoming mindful the more you will realise that the present moment is all there ever is. The past and the future do not exist they are only thoughts in your head, the past is just a memory & the future is just an imagination. The only thing that exists is the current moment, be always present.

While your taking the first step and practising your mindfulness, I’m writing my next post. About how to use your mindfulness to start meditating.

High Protein Vegetarian Black Bean Lasagne Recipe.

This veggie lasagne is actually amazing. It has very high protein so great for all you fitness addicts. I love making a massive one of these on a Sunday and I just split it up into containers when its cooked and put them in the freezer, so easy to just take to work for my lunch and microwave through the week. Let me know what you think if you try it!

2 Tablespoons of Olive Oil

1 Pack of fresh Lasagne Pasta Sheets

1 Pint of Skim Ricotta Cheese

½ Pint of Crème Fraiche

1 Egg

1 Chopped Onion

2 Minced Garlic Clove

4 Ounces of Mozzarella OR a small block of Cheddar cheese

2 16 Ounce Tins of Black Beans

2 Teaspoons of Dried Oregano

1 Teaspoon of Dried Rosemary

1 Teaspoon of Dried Thyme

1 Can of Tomato Passata

6 Chopped Tomatoes

Pre Heat oven to 170 degrees.

In a large bowl, blend the egg, ricotta cheese and crème fraiche and then put to one side.

Sauté the chopped onion, and garlic in Olive Oil in a large skillet until ready.

Mash up one can of the black beans in a bowl and add them into the skillet, then add in the other can of whole black beans, the chopped tomatoes and the tomato passata.

Add to the skillet your oregano, rosemary and thyme and simmer until heated through.

Spread over the base of a large baking dish a layer of the black bean mixture, then carefully spoon on top a layer of the ricotta mixture & top with pasta sheets.  Repeat this step 2 more times.

Cover the top final layer of pasta sheets with mozzarella or cheddar cheese, make sure you completely cover the sheets or they will go hard when in the oven.

Bake in oven for around 45 minutes, leave to stand for 10-15 minutes before serving.

Now if your not a vegetarian you can just use mince instead of black beans in the mixture.

If you are vegetarian you could still substitute the black beans for Quorn mince which is actually so nice. I try not to eat a lot of Quorn myself only on rare occasion and that’s why I have the black beans, but I know especially for new vegetarians one of the hardest things about the change is not having that texture your used to from having meat in your food. So Quorn mince is a great option if this is you.

Now I normally wouldn’t eat pasta but I do make an exception when I fancy a lasagne. If you are very strict and won’t have pasta sheets, I have once substituted the pasta sheets for sliced eggplant and it actually turned out very nice – I do much prefer the pasta though.
